What is an Energy Management System?

An energy management system (EMS) is a system that allows organisations to manage and optimise their energy use and consumption as part of achieving ISO 50001 certification. An EMS typically consists of a set of policies, procedures, and tools that enable organisations to monitor, analyse, and control their energy use.

The primary objective of an EMS is to help organsations reduce their energy consumption and the associated costs while maintaining or improving their business operations. An EMS achieves this by providing organisations with the ability to track and analyse energy consumption data, identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency and implement energy-saving measures.

EMSs can range from simple, manual tracking systems to sophisticated computerised systems that automate energy management processes. They can be applied to all types of organisations, including industrial, commercial, and institutional settings, and can be tailored to meet the specific needs of an organisation.

What are the benefits of ISO 50001?

ISO 50001 provides organisations with insight into their energy consumption and how best to adjust their processes to become more efficient, cost-effective, and eco-friendly. It provides the tools and processes needed for long-term growth and success.

By achieving ISO 50001 certification, organisations of all types and sizes can enjoy the benefits of being greener, more financially savvy, compliant with government legislation and aligned with customer wants and attitudes.

  • Increased energy efficiency
  • Smaller carbon footprint

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ISO 50001 and ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 enables organisations to methodically identify and manage their environmental impacts in the widest possible scope. In contrast, ISO 50001 outlines the energy management system (EnMS) requirements that organisations must create and implement to establish an energy policy.

How long does ISO 50001 certification last?

ISO 50001 certification is valid for three years, and requires annual surveillance audits to ensure progress and compliance. After the three years is up, a recertification audit will occur.
